Introduction
AMA’s Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs Report
The AMA’s Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs (CEJA) has issued a report titled "Industry Support of Professional Education in Medicine". This report will be presented to the AMA’s House of Delegates at its upcoming meeting in June. One of the recommendations of the report is that, "Individual physicians and institutions of medicine, such as medical schools, teaching hospitals, and professional organizations (including state and medical specialty societies) must not accept industry funding to support professional education activities."
Please note that no action has been taken on the report; it should be considered informational at this time. Only reports which have been adopted by the AMA’s House of Delegates can be considered the official policy of the AMA.
The Alliance is recognized as an official observer at the AMA’s House of Delegates and is afforded an opportunity to present testimony during the AMA’s reference committee meeting on June 15th when this report is expected to be discussed. The Alliance can also request an opportunity to offer comments on the report during the formal House of Delegates’ proceedings that will most likely take place on June 16th.
The Alliance’s Advocacy Committee is currently reviewing the CEJA report and will develop an appropriate response. The Alliance plans to exercise its right to participate in both the AMA’s reference committee and House of Delegates’ debate on this subject.
